five steps of development:

April 10, 2007

someone said that my poetry is not funny, like it was an insult. i'm not sure. it could be an insult, and maybe the person thought they were insulting me, but i'm not trying to be funny anymore.

here are five steps for the complete development of a consumer-era hunter:

1. you learn about hunting. you practice shooting a gun, and sometimes shoot a few things and maybe eat them, or not.

2. you practice hunting. you shoot a lot of things, and you eat a lot of things, but not all of them.

3. you become a hunter. you track animals, and begin to understand your relationship with those animals. you eat everything you kill. this is where most people stop their development.

4. you lose the will to hunt for a good time. hunting become serious, and you understand what it is to take an animal's life. you try to only eat meat you kill.

5. you understand the futility of hunting. you enjoy being in nature and around animals without having to make it into bloodsport. you eat vegetables.

when you first attempt to write, you are attracted to what is funny or dramatic, because those are the only two emotions that exist to most developing people. those are the two emotions that result in a physical response-- so naturally, you assume they are all that should exist.

when you begin to hunt, you understand that you can shoot and kill something, and that gives you power over nature. a lot of hunters don't develop past this point, because people don't like to admit that there is powerlessness in being, unless their religion requires them to.

this is why we have wars and use oil and coal and turn rain forests into print journals and first novels. killing nature and animals shows that we have power over nature and the earth, and humans like that-- when everything is obedient to us.

it is not until the fourth step of development that the hunter realizes how manipulating nature and killing animals is not a right, but a horrible creation that has allowed mankind to evolve and maintain a false sense of power over nature.

similarly, humor and drama allow artists to maintain a false sense of control over the person they are supposedly engaging. if someone makes a good fart joke or if suzy dies from leukemia on tv, this will not move you towards a place that is unique or original-- instead, when you laugh or feel for little suzy, you are being manipulated by one of two bland reactions: laughter or tears. it is not until someone like little suzy has horrible leukemia farts until she dies, that you realize what range and powerlessness exists within human emotion, and can choose to laugh or cry yourself.

almost no hunter ever reaches the fifth step of development.

How do robots fit into this? I think the T1000 kills for pleasure, but hasn't advanced to realizing it's purely bloodsport. Thus, the T1000 is also a poor writer.

...

My emotional level is stuck on step #1.

Gen.1 28: And God blessed the man and maid and told them, "Multiply and fill the earth and subdue it; you are the masters of the fish and birds and all the animals." This ended the sisth day.(Step 6)
